A Concise Overview to Extreme Tourism

A Concise Overview to Extreme Tourism

Extreme tourism is a very niche part of the tourism industry, which is characterized by involving travel in very dangerous places or participating in perilous feats during the course of travel. It is often synchronized with extreme sports. The main reason and motive behind taking such activities is to experience the adrenalin rush or ‘the kick’ one gets by the factor of risk. The more the risk, the more is the rush. The urge to experience the adrenalin rush is totally controlled by the factors of professionalism and the extent of engagement.

Extreme tourism differs from the traditional concept in ways of pre-defined itinerary. While hotel travel bookings are a must for the conventional one, extreme tourism completely dismisses the notion of pre-booked travel. This aspect actually helps in saving quite a lot of money in the form of jump-start before the actual travel. Extreme tourism can be arranged single-handedly or via the means of a particular travel agency. It is often criticized by many environment lovers stating that such activities pose a potential threat to the environment.

The famous Extreme tourism destinations are Chernobyl Tours in Ukraine, a swim in the Devil’s Pool of the Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe and Zambia, a walk on the planks at Mount Hua in China and the Bolivian ‘Death Road Tour’ to name a few. The activities that are associated with extreme tourism are mountain and river trekking, canoeing and Rafting, Skydiving, paragliding, bungee jumping, Base Jumping, Caving or Speleology, skiing, storm chasing, etc.
