What is the Seven Magic Mountains in Las Vegas?

The “Seven Magic Mountains” is an art exhibition located in the desert outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. It will remain in place for the next two years. This is Ugo Rondinone’s (a renowned Swiss artist) large-scale, colorful artwork that features seven (30 to 35ft high) locally-sourced boulder totems.

The exhibition is visible along Interstate 15 and across the desert landscape. It represents the artist’s critical point of view of the illusion Las Vegas offers.

According to the artist, the location of the exhibition was not random, and actually stands right in the middle of the mountain ranges, desert, and the Jean Dry Lake backdrop. The Interstate represents a kind of “border” for the natural and artificial.

The funds for this artwork came from the New York Art Production Fund and the Nevada Museum of Art located in Reno.

About the Artist

Ugo Rondinone, an artist that has a fluid range of media and forms in his artwork, was born 1964 in Brunnen, Switzerland. He currently works and lives in New York and his work has become recognized for channeling profound insight into the human condition and psychological expressiveness, and the relationship between the nature and humans.

By referring to existentialism, romanticism, and the natural world at the same time, his artworks represent a “mental trinity”. This was the foundation for his work in more than two decades.

His artwork traveled the globe, and his installations were seen in 2013 in M Museum, Leuven, and Art Institute of Chicago in 2013; Museo Anahuacalli, Mexico, and Rockbund Art Museum, Shanghai, in 2014; Secession, Vienna, and Palais de Tokyo, Paris, in 2015; and Carre d’Art, Nimes, Boijmans van Beuningen, Rotterdam, in 2016.
